Unlike DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase does not have a proofreading activity. This enzymatic activity ensures obtaining an exact replica of the nucleic acid that is copied. Lack of proofreading is a cause of the high rate of mutation of RNA viruses. COVOD-19 virus does not show the high rate of mutation like other RNA viruses, e.g., influenza virus. Is this because of proofreading activity of corona virus replicase?

Do you mean the 3’→5′ exonuclease activity?

          The answer is yes, sure.

This activity is also the cause why many nucleoside analogue antiviral drugs do not work with the corona virus.
