What is meant by liquid biopsy?

Is a urine sample considered a liquid biopsy?

Liquid biopsy is the analysis of tumor cells or tumor cell products obtained from blood or other body fluids. The tumor is thus accessed by a minimally invasive technique. The blood can be analyzed for circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor-derived DNA, tumor proteome, or tumor metabolome. These constitute tumor markers in the blood.

Is a urine sample considered a liquid biopsy? Yes, if it is obtained to look for markers of a tumor, like tumor cells or tumor DNA.

              I agree with Y Soun.

Besides the ease and convenience for the patient, Liquid biopsy can detect cancer very early before the appearance of any signs and before any imaging technique can do. This is of utmost importance when we are concerned with monitoring the efficacy of treatment and testing for relapses.

An important advantage of liquid biopsy is the detection of DNA mutations that can be targeted by immunotherapy or targeted therapy, thus tailoring the treatment (personalized therapy).
