Written by Emil Luca: Liquid biopsy automation by Tethis S.p.A., Milan, Italy aims to standardize liquid biopsy in the clinical practice for the precise management of cancer. Their workflow starts with the fully automated, standardized preparation of a blood sample at the point of blood collection. For this purpose, they produced See.d®.
Liquid Biopsy promises to revolutionize cancer management by detecting it earlier and better guiding treatment. Searching for content released by a tumor, sample preparation is critical. The challenge is that tumor content is rare and unstable. There is a strong clinical need for standardized technologies securing high quality samples for reliable diagnosis. Liquid biopsy automation starting by See.d® provides a universal, standardized, optimal preparation of all blood content for liquid biopsy analyses.
Cancer Blood Tests Revolutionize Oncology
The innovative pre-analytical platform, See.d®, performs a completely automated, standardized and gentle preparation of a blood sample at the point of blood collection. Cellular fraction is gently stabilized on proprietary, nanocoated SBS (Smart Bio Surface) slides, as a fixed monolayer with intact morphology. SBS slides allow immediate, gentle, and efficient adhesion of any living cell, including all white blood cells and circulating tumor cells. Meanwhile, the plasma is made available for the analysis of cell-free content.
Automation of sample processing guarantees perfect sample integrity and eliminates the need for specialized technical skills. There is no need for whole blood shipment and preservation, one of the most critical points of liquid biopsy pre-analytical workflows.
The blood sample is drawn on EDTA, with no need for special tubes with preservatives, and introduced to See.d®, where it is processed automatically. Plasma is separated, red blood cells are lysed, and the remaining cells are spread as a monolayer on the nanocoated slides.
A complete analytical evaluation of morphological, proteomic, and genetic features is possible at single cell level or on cell-free content. All the traditional techniques, such as cytology, immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, FISH and molecular analysis can be performed. Combination of artificial intelligence-driven imaging analysis with advanced genetic sequencing on perfectly prepared samples allow maximum sensitivity and specificity of liquid biopsy tests.
